Additional forestry and urban forestry qualifications providers

There has been growth in alternative learning qualification providers. These are providers outside of the standard college or university setting. These providers often provide routes of study such as ELearning, distance learning or correspondence courses that allow students to study independently without having to attend a specific site.

There are a number of alternative qualification providers offering courses in forestry and urban forestry. Every effort has been made to provide details of all relevant qualification providers but there may be some providers not here that do offer appropriate courses. Details of distance learning qualifications offered by any of the following landbased colleges can be found on the ‘Other Providers’ page.

If you do have details of appropriate qualification providers please send details to and all appropriate qualifications will be added.

Bangor University

Bangor University has been teaching forestry for over 110 years and since 2000, it has offered a range of exciting and innovative part-time distance learning forestry courses. The MSc forestry (distance learning) course has an excellent reputation for producing high quality, adaptable and professional graduates. Many of our alumni have successfully used the course to help them change careers, gain promotion, develop their business and/or simply satisfy their curiosity for trees and forests. The course is designed to provide students with training in the management of forest resources, understanding of the scientific, academic and practical principles which underpin forest management and forest ecosystem function and the interrelationships between government, industry and communities’ forests and associated land-use.

Capel Manor College

For more than 40 years the Royal Forestry Society’s (RFS) Certificate in Arboriculture has set the standard for craftsman-level arborists. The RFS Certificate is widely recognised throughout the arboriculture industry as proof that the holder has both a good theoretical knowledge of arboriculture and is proficient in the practical skills needed to succeed.

The theoretical and the practical components of the  Certificate are studied separately, Capel offers both components. The practical component can be achieved through the College professional short courses programme, whilst the theoretical element is taught through our online virtual learning environment.
